Andrew Victor Ney, age 81, of Alliance, died at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Alliance Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family, many of whom rushed to his bedside from as far away as Oregon.
He was born May 7, 1925 in Cumberland, Md., to Andrew S. and Edna C. (Mace) Ney and had lived in Alliance since 1949.
Andrew was an engineering graduate of Case Institute of Technology and was a member of the prestigious engineering fraternity SAE. He founded two very successful companies in his 50-year entrepreneurial career. The last of which, Salem-Republic Rubber Company in Sebring, just celebrated its 35th anniversary. He was still actively serving as Chairman of the Board at the time of his passing.
Andrew was a member of Fluid Power Society, Lakeside Yacht Club, National Society of Professional Engineers, Iron and Steel Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, National Federation of Independent Business, Rubber Manufacturers Association, Ohio Manufacturers Association, Elks Club and Alliance Country Club. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.
His friends called him Andy. He loved the water and was a passionate sailor until his health declined. He was a model plane builder, a hobby he shared with his sons for many years. He loved electronics and had a world class stereo system. His tastes ranged from popular to classical music. He cut a dazzling rug across many dance floors with his lifelong dance partner, Dotty. An avid photographer, he regularly tortured his family for that perfect shot. Did we mention he was a perfectionist? He was driven to excellence and everything to which he applied himself yielded extraordinary results. Our dad's genuine interest and concern for others was a hallmark of this elegant man.
Our father will be missed by many, but deeply and perpetually by his wife, Dorothy A. (Phillips) Ney, whom he married June 4, 1949; and his children, Drew and Cheryl (Downey) Ney of Beloit, Dominique (Ney) Nero and Micky Manolescu of Norcross, GA, Michael and Lynn (Curley) Ney of Oviedo, FL, Dorsey Ney of Homeworth, Leslie (Ney) O'Neill and Patrick O'Neill of Lake Oswego, OR, Victori (Ney) Ribeiro and William Ribeiro of St. Paul, MN; his grandchildren, Casey Bronzovic of Okinawa, Japan, Marshall Ney of Beloit, Alissa Manolescu of Atlanta, GA, Kristina Manolescu of Kansas City, KS, and Emily Manolescu of Gallup, NM, Adara Ney of Gainesville, FL and Michelle and Melissa Ney of Oviedo, FL, Richard Kindler of Alliance, Alex Kindler of Tupper Lake, NY, Cimarron Ney-George of Homeworth, and, Nathan and Liam O'Neill of Lake Oswego, OR; and nieces Kathy Ney of Mobile, AL, and Michelle (Ney) McNabb, nephew Edward Ney, and sister-in-law Patricia Ney, all of Newnan, GA.
Andrew was a generous contributor to many private and public charities. Please continue his legacy by making memorial contributions to the St. Patrick School in Weston, WV, the Alliance YMCA, Alliance Community Hospital Fund, Mount Union College Scholarship Fund, or Case Institute of Technology Scholarship Fund in Cleveland.
According to his wishes, a private family viewing was arranged by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Friends may register online at www.ctcfuneral.com. There will be an event to honor and celebrate his life at a later date. (4-21-07)
