Andrew Veg, age 86, of Canton, died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Aultman Hospital.
He was born September 9, 1923, in Alliance, Ohio, to Andrew and Susana (Degi) Veg.
Andy attended Liberty Elementary School and graduated from Alliance High School. He also graduated from Mount Union College, Ohio State School of Medicine and studied anesthesia at the Cleveland Clinic prior to practicing at Aultman Hospital. He practiced for 11 years as a General Practitioner in Canton and from the early 70's till 1994; he was an anesthesiologist at Aultman Hospital. Following retirement from Anesthesia at Aultman Hospital, Andy volunteered his service at the Agape "Soup" Kitchen, where he was affectionately known as the "Candy Man."
Andy was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II in Germany and Japan.
A member of the St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church in Canton, he was a former Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Stark County Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, and American Society of Anesthesiologists. He enjoyed studying bible history, was an avid reader and collector of books and a philanthropist who shied away from recognition.
Andy is survived by his brother, Joe (Maryanne) Veg of Pittsburgh, Pa.; nephew, Michael Veg of Pittsburgh, Pa.; caretaker and friends, Alta and Linda; friends, Dennis (Jan) Ross of North Canton; his family at Aultman Hospital; and Greg and Jeanie Brown and staff at Gregory's Restaurant for the many years they considered Andy as part of their "Family."
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dr. Veg's family would like to acknowledge Windsor Medical Center, Aultman Hospital, and Dr. Steven Weaver for their compassionate care of Andy.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Alliance City Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Bruce Roth officiating. Interment will follow.
