Arthur A. Malone, age 88, of Alliance, passed away at 2:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1925, in Kiln, Mississippi, to Booker and Sophronia (Leon) Malone.
Upon graduation from high school in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Arthur joined the United States Army, serving in World War II from 1944 to 1946. He then enrolled at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, where he met his wife, Gloria. They were married July 23, 1949.
Upon moving to Alliance, he acquired a master of education degree from Kent State and became head of the business department at Alliance High School and coordinator of the Cooperative Office Education program, a position that afforded him the opportunity to place many students in office jobs throughout the city. He was past president of the Alliance Education Association, past secretary of the Ohio Business Teachers Association and a life member of the National Education Association.
A former Kiwanian, he also served on several area boards including the YMCA, the Family Counseling Service and the Stark County T.B. and R.D. Board.
He was a 62 year member of the Second Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board for many years.
In addition to being a charter member of the Alliance Area Negro History Club, he was past Commander of the Louis Dixon Post of the American Legion, member of the William Taylor Post, past Exalted Ruler of Cantell Lodge No. 1417, I.B.P.O.E, past master of Mount Olive Lodge No. 66, F. & A.M., past high priest of Mackey Chapter No. 43, R.A.M., past potentate of Al Kaf Temple No. 109, Shriners of Akron, member of Bezaleel Consistory No. 15 of Cleveland, Grand Inspector General of the United Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction, A.A.S.R., and past patron of Starlite Chapter No. 83, O.E.S. His fraternity was Alpha Phi Alpha.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 65 years, Dr. Gloria Malone; son, Merrick (Marsha) of Alexandria, VA; two daughters, Deanna Malone of Richmond, VA and Myrna (Cornelius) Holmes of Pittsburgh, PA; three granddaughters, Piper Malone of Bethesda, MD, and Courtney and Jordan Holmes of Pittsburgh, PA; special sisters-in-law, Virginia Proctor, Vivian Snodgrass and Judge Lucile A. Watts; godson, Jason Young; former students and many friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Second Baptist Church with Pastor Willie Bell officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
