Barbara Jane Spahlinger Alton, age 78, of Mansfield, formerly of Alliance, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at MedCentral Health System in Mansfield.
She was born March 19, 1931, in Alliance, Ohio, to Edwin Jerry Trott and Bertine (Huntley) Trott.
A graduate of Alliance High School, Barbara earned her Bachelor of Arts at Mount Union College and her Masters in Educational Media from Kent State University. She taught English, French and Spanish at Lake High School and Marlington Middle School. She was also head librarian for Kent State Regional Campus in Salem.
Barbara was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a life member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary No. 467 and past president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
Survivors include her husband, Donald R. Alton, whom she married July 18, 1988; daughter Marian Spahlinger Benjamin of Johnsville; daughter-in-law, Shelly (Todd) Kugler of Alliance; two grandsons, Timothy and James Spahlinger; granddaughter, Cora Lynn Benjamin; sister, Frances (James) Rohrer of Alliance; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harold Auman Spahlinger; and her son, Earl Spahlinger.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Pam Bruno of First Christian Church officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. There will be a Ladies Elks Auxiliary of BPOE No. 467 service held at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
