Carl Leslie McAlister, age 96, died December 29, 2013, in Lakeland, Florida, where he had made his winter home for a number of years.
He was born June 27, 1917, in Limaville, Ohio, to Carl and Gladys (Miller) McAlister and was a resident of the Marlboro area all his life.
Carl was a graduate of Marlboro High School (Class of 1935) and Ohio State University with a degree in agricultural education. He grew up working on the family farm and at various times worked for Quaker Oats in Akron and Barberton City Schools.
Most of his working life, Carl was a self-employed home builder in the Alliance area, building more than 50 local homes.
In his spare time, Carl enjoyed gardening and working outdoors. A former member of the Chapel in Marlboro, he had most recently attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Carl was a quiet man who always had time for helping friends and family.
He served four years during World War II with the First Infantry Division (Big Red I) 26th Infantry Regiment, Cannon Company. While serving his country he participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Normandy's Omaha Beach on D-Day, remaining in the military until the U.S. Army reached Germany. He was recipient of a Bronze Star and a medal awarded by the province of Brittany to D-Day Veterans.
Carl's life spanned the era of horse and buggy days, to jumbo jets and super-highways.
Carl is survived by his wife, Louise (Pitts) McAlister; stepsons, Stephen (Ginger) Pitts and Mark (Wendy) McFry; three step-grandchildren; sister, Margaret (Robert) Shoemaker; brother, Don (Rose) McAlister; and ten nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Cora McAlister, Wilma Hufford and Wayne McAlister; and many cousins, aunts and uncles.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Corbett of Aldersgate United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, January 6, 2014. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
