Charles Chester Eynon, age 85, of Alliance died at 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at his home surrounded by loved ones. A lifetime resident, he was born on May 25, 1931, to Charles Chester Eynon and Kathleen Ellett Eynon.
A 1949 graduate of Alliance High School, Mr. Eynon spent several summers at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. In 1953 Mr. Eynon graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He served as commander of Sigma Nu Fraternity during his senior year. After graduation, he served with the U. S. Army from 1953-1955 as Battalion Finance N.C.O.
In May, 1955 he married his college sweetheart, Susan A. Healey, in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Eynon returned to Alliance where he joined his family business, the Eynon-Guthrie Insurance Company.
In 1967 Mr. Eynon started Eynon Construction Company, where he designed and built single family homes and more than 15 commercial buildings over the next two decades, including Lavery Chevrolet and 13 other automobile dealerships throughout northeast Ohio.
Throughout his life Mr. Eynon enjoyed serving the Alliance community. In the mid-seventies he was elected to city council for the 5th Ward.
Mr. Eynon volunteered for YMCA membership fundraising drives, was a member of the Alliance Hospital Building Committee, served as a congressional liaison to Washington, DC for Association Builders and Contractors, and was ambassador for the Alliance Chamber of Commerce Development Corporation. He was also a trustee of the Building Committee for the new Alliance Senior Citizens Center.
Mr. Eynon was a two-term president of the Five County Building Official Association and a board member of the Ohio Building Official Association. He also served on the planning commission for the city of Alliance.
During 1986-1996 Mr. Eynon served as chief building official for Stark and Summit counties and the city of Alliance. He was also safety service director for the city of Alliance.
He owned Aamco Transmission Service of Alliance for 20 years, and won a city citation for beautifying the area on Arch Avenue in the downtown district.
Mr. Eynon was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees for two terms, Rotary Club of Alliance, Filibusters, and the Alliance Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed piloting small aircraft, and traveled to many countries throughout the world with his wife Sue at his side.
Mr. Eynon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Susan Healey Eynon; his four daughters Elizabeth Eynon (David) Wetherell, of Palm Beach, FL, Linda Eynon Welch, of Delray Beach, FL, Carol Eynon, of Kingston, NY, and Jill Eynon, of Washington, DC, three grandchildren, Emily Welch, Daniel Welch, and Graham Eynon-Holloway, and his sister, Jane Eynon Moncrief, of Alliance, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Chester Eynon and Kathleen Ellett Eynon, and his aunt, Eleanor Ellett Thompson.
Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance, OH 44601. . Calling hours will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life service will follow calling hours at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
