Charles David Grove, age 82, of Alliance, died Sunday morning in Bonita Springs, Florida with his loving wife and daughters by his side.
He was born January 22, 1929, in Pasadena, California, to Eber and Murel (Moore) Grove.
A 1947 graduate of Alliance High School, Charlie graduated in 1951 from Duke University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a United States Air Force Veteran having served from 1952 to 1954, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
In 1955 he returned to Alliance to join his father Eber Grove in the family business, "Grove Appliance". Charlie was very family oriented and loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Charlie was active as a trustee for the University of Mount Union, Co-Founder of the Greater Alliance Foundation, Past President of the Alliance Community Hospital, Past President of the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce, and Past President of the YMCA board of directors. He was a member of the Abiding Savior Lutheran Church.
Charlie was a former member of the Alliance Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was actively involved in the Stuckey Interfaith Child Development Center.
Charlie will be deeply missed by his family, including his wife, Carol (Unger) Grove, whom he married June 21, 1952; two daughters, Carrie (Reggie) Givens and Beth (David) Mitchell, both of Alliance; seven grandchildren, Brooke (Aaron) Riley, Ellie (Pete) Opperman, Leah Maholm, Laura, Chas and Lettie Mitchell and Heather (Brian) Givens Andrews; three great grandchildren, Kenzi, Keegan and Conlin Riley, his sister, Elin Wagner of Alliance; two nieces, one nephew and his loyal friend, his dog, Spanky.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in the Meyers Sanctuary of the Dewald Chapel at the University of Mount Union with Pastor Megan Elliott officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 - 9 p.m. Monday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Alliance Development Foundation, 960 W. State St. Suite 130, Alliance, Ohio 44601 on behalf of the Alliance YMCA and the Stuckey Interfaith Child Development Center.
Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance, Ohio.
