Charles F. Hanks, Jr. age 93, of Alliance and Copeland Oaks, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Crandall Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born February 11, 1916 in Allegan, Michigan to Charles and Della G. (Thomas) Hanks. A graduate of the University of Illinois he received a bachelor's degree in ceramic engineering.
Charles was a member of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church for 56 years and was a long time choir member.
He was a loyal member of Kiwanis for 34 years. He was awarded the mayor's citizen of the year award in 1994. Charles was a member of the American Ceramic Society and the Carnation City Players.
A US Army Field Artillery veteran, of World War II, he served in New Guinea, the Phillipines and Luzon. He wrote several articles and books and gave lectures to share his personal experiences.
Known as Charlie to his friends and Grongie to his family, he had a love for music, woodworking, and traveling the world. His zest for life, his contributions to family and community, and the sunshine of his smile touched so many people.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 70 years, Beth (Gronemeier) Hanks; his children, Sue (Fred) Zellers of Lancaster, Chuck (Sharon) Hanks of Enon, and Barbara (Tom) Richmond of Alliance; his grandchildren, Keith Zellers of Dallas, TX, Christine Zellers of Fayetteville NC., Drew Zellers of Columbus, Darlene Zellers of Charlotte, NC, Jill Hanks of Scottsdale, AZ, Amanda (Nic) Brisei�½o of Aptos, CA, Jaime Richmond and Eric Richmond both of Cleveland; and one great-granddaughter Carley Zellers of Fayetteville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009 in Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks, Sebring.
