Charlie R. Benner age 77 of Lisbon died at 7:10 p.m. Thursday November 6, 2003 at Salem Community Hospital.
He was born in Knox Township, Columbiana County on April 15, 1926 to Frank and Anna (Stroup) Benner.
He served with the Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism on Okinawa. Charlie will be inducted on May 5, 2006 into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for valor, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Benner was a self-employed mason contractor for 39 years.
He was a life member of the Legion of Valor, George D. Worth Post 574, and Military Order of the Purple Heart, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines Association, and the Salem Chapter of the DAV. He was also a member of the VFW.
Charlie spent most of his adult life in Boy Scouting. He played a big part in bringing Scouting to Knox Twp., and was awarded the Silver Beaver and District Award of Merit.
He is survived by his wife Wilda J. (Wade) Benner, whom he married October 3, 1985, children Jack L. and Lee Ann (Malloy) Benner of Salem, Cynthia R. and Tony Burkhart of Alliance, Ronald L. Benner of Alliance, Ted A. and Nancy (Falk) Benner of Alliance, step-children Bonnie J. Leone of Alliance, Barry L. and Lana Conrad of Alliance, Karen S. and Gary L. Wyatt of Alliance, Roger D. and Linda Conrad, grandchildren William, Daniel, Andrew, Amy, Amanda, and Casey, step-grandchildren Daniel, Heather, Lindsay, and Eric, great grandchildren Kolton, and Kassie, brothers and sisters, Helen Murphy of Sebring, Hugh H. Benner of Beloit, Walter L. Benner of Alliance, and John O. Benner of Alliance, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers and sisters Luella M. Kornbau, Thelma P. Stewart, Ray H. Benner, and Evelyn L. Kasso, and Dillon W. Benner (infant).
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Sawyer of Middle Sandy Presbyterian Church and Pastor Rod Doran of Community Bible Church officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7-9 Interment will be in Reading Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
