Chester E. Bartram Sr., age 98, of Massillon, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, October 17, 2015, at Hanover Healthcare.
He was born February 14, 1917, in Nolan, West Virginia, to Benard and Georgia (Thompson) Bartram.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Eva (Jividen) Bartram, whom he married January 17, 1942. She passed away March 26, 2010.
A 1936 graduate of Chattaroy High School, in West Virginia, Chester also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946 and a Master of Arts degree in 1947 from Marshall University in Huntington, W.V. and a Ph.D. in 1956 from The Ohio State University.
He began his teaching career in a one-room school; he was a teacher, principal, and supervisor in Mason Co., W.V. schools for 11 years. For the last 28 years of his career, Chester was professor and chairman of the Education Department at Mount Union College in Alliance retiring in 1983. Since his retirement he researched, wrote and published three genealogy books, "The Solomon and Nancy Ellen (Ball) Thompson Family" (1993), "The George Washington McCoy Family" (1995), and "Legacy" (2007). He also wrote two autobiographies titled "Yesterday" (2004) and "The Journey Home: Experiences of WWII and Beyond" (2010). He co-authored along with his niece, Nell Dean (Chapman) Ross, "Journey Into Yesterday: Along the Bartram Trail."
A veteran of WWII, with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945, Chester served overseas in England, North Africa and Italy earning 13 battle stars. An active member of Alliance First Baptist Church since 1956, Chester served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, a Baptist Youth Fellowship
advisor, and a member of the Diaconate Board for 23 years and awarded Member Emeritus of the Diaconate Board in 1999. He was on the pulpit search committee for three pastors, and served as church moderator for six years.
He is survived by four children; Dr. Chester E. Bartram Jr. of North Canton, Bart (Linda) Bartram of Middletown, Maryland, Joette (Larry) McCaw of Massillon and Judy (David) Lundquist of Canton; 11 grandchildren, Liz Babb, Dr. Anna Bui, Debbie Ehrman, Mark Bartram, Mandy Bartram, Stacy Bartram, Lisa Miller, Eric McCaw, Rev. John McCaw, Kathryne Sell and Commander David Lundquist; 23 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Doris Jividen of Wheelersburg, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Marie (Bill) Hobbs, Pansy (David) Emmons, Gypsy (Zeph) Chapman; and brothers, Cullie (Thelma) Bartram and Walter (Viola) Bartram.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the Alliance First Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Rhodes, grandson, Rev. John Bartram McCaw and nephew, Rev. James Chapman co-officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.
