Christopher L. Penny, loving and devoted son of Larry G. Penny and the late Nancy L. Penny, age 25, of Alliance, passed away at 5:36 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born May 30, 1984, in Canton, Ohio. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church.
Christopher was a 2002 graduate of Alliance High School, where he was in the Top 20 in his class, and member of the National Honor Society.
During his high school days, he was captain of the Alliance High School Golf team of which he lettered four years, received the first hole-in-one in Alliance High School history during regular match play, and made another hole-in-one during the season.
Chris started playing with the Alliance Symphony at the age of 12. While in high school, Christopher founded the "Alliance Strings" and played at the Alliance Women's Club, several other clubs and private functions.
He then received his business and music degrees from Denison University in 2006, where he was a pledge educator and president of his fraternity Delta Upsilon, and member of the Denison Chamber Orchestra. Chris was on the National Dean's List and Dean's List for four years while at Denison; and played rugby for Team Ireland.
He was a board member of the Alliance Foundation.
A member of Boy Scout Troop No. 50, Christopher attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a first chair accomplished cellist and composed two pieces of music, one named "Elegy" for his Mom, Nancy and another named "Portrait of a Holocaust Survivor", both of which were copyrighted. He was invited to play at Julliard, the Kennedy Center and the New York City Jewish Center as a Soloist.
Christopher and his father started the Nancy L. Penny Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors at both Alliance High School and Marlington High School.
Christopher interned for Senator Richard G. Lugar with the 108th Congress and served a 2nd internship on the National Defense Committee. He interned later with the law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour, and Pease in Columbus, Ohio. He taught cello privately at home for under-privileged children and previously worked at Lockheed Martin Defense Systems.
Survivors include his father, Larry G. Penny of Alliance; his grandmother whom he had a great love for, Rita M. Penny of Alliance; aunts and uncles, Gary L. Penny and (fiance' Carla Court) of Homeworth, Thomas E. (Karla) Penny of Massillon, Kimberly K. Ferguson and (fiance') John Bergmeyer) of Louisville, Dianne L. (Donald) Hoover of Salem, Patricia A. (Steven) Loy of Alliance, Kevin L. Penny of Atwater, and Randy A. Penny of Barberton; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy L. Penny; his sister, Kristen Renee' Penny; his maternal grandparents, John N. and Norma Teeple; paternal grandfather, Gale T. Penny; uncles, Jeffrey A. Penny and Keith L. Penny; aunt, Tammy J. Scott, and cousin, Stephanie M. Loy.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Jim McCurdy of First United Presbyterian Church officiating Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
