Clair W. Goddard

Clair W. Goddard, age 95, of Canton, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2016 peacefully at his home. He was born on September 24, 1921 in Alliance, Ohio to Roy W. and Almeda J. (Germanson) Goddard.

Clair was a 1939 graduate of Alliance High School. He worked several jobs after graduating before enlisting in the Army Air Corp in April 1941. Clair was an aircraft maintainer/inspector and served for 32 months in the Asiatic Pacific Theater serving with the 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers) between 1943 and 1945. He fought in India, Burma, and China. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars.

After his discharge in 1945 he attended Mount Union College on the GI Bill graduating with a Bachelor of Science-Major in Chemistry graduating in 1949. He married Eleanor Williams of Salem, Ohio on July 17, 1949.

He began employment with the Babcock and Wilcox Research Center as a research chemist in 1949. He spent 34 years there retiring in 1983. He bought an RV with the idea of traveling to country especially Florida and Arizona. He went to Florida first in the Winter of 1984 and returned for several winters finally moving permanently to Naples, Florida in 1987. He lived there until January 2007 when he moved to Canton, Ohio.

Clair was a life long member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Alliance. He continued his support even while living elsewhere. He was a very good golfer and bowler. Right after World War II he and a friend bought, restored and flew a J6 training aircraft. Before going overseas he had an Indian motorcycle which he enjoyed riding in the hills of California and elsewhere when he could. He bought a Harley when he retired and he and his wife would go on trips with a touring club.

Survivors include his only son, Rick L. Goddard of Laurel, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife (who passed November 30, 1998).

Services will be held at 1pm, December 28, 2016 at the Alliance City Cemetery Chapel with Pastor James McCurdy officiating. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery beside his wife.
