Clara Hartzell, age 99, of Deerfield, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011.
She was born December 1, 1911, in Switzerland, to John and Ida Zahler and resided in Deerfield, Oh., since 1937.
She was a member of the Deerfield Friends Church for 70 years, the Deerfield Quilter Guild, and member of the Deerfield Dandies for 30 years where she also played the accordion, and taught Sunday school at the church. She loved to sew and garden.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann Freetage of Deerfield and Emma Lou Wagner of Louisville; two great-nieces, Andra (Ohman) Frescura and Lorrie (Steen) Hanzak; ten grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Paula Warner of Akron and Johanna Gardine of Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 50 years, Ray E. Hartzell, whom she married June 29, 1936 and who died in 1987; loving daughter, Ellen Riemenschneider; sisters, Rose, Frieda, Ida, Martha, Bertha, Emma and Margaret; brothers, John, Ernie, Otto, and Bob; and 2 sons-in-law, Russ Riemenschneider and Paul Wagner.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Deerfield Friends Church with Pastor Jody Hill officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at Hartzell Cemetery in N. Benton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deerfield Friends Church, 1261 St. Rt. 14, Deerfield, Oh, 44411-0185.
