Clarice I. Bergemann, age 86 of Alliance, died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday October 26, 2004 at Aultman Hospital.
She was born in Watford, Ontario Canada to Dr. William and Christena Isabella (Crawford) Siddall and lived in the Alliance area since 1927.
A graduate of Alliance High School, Mrs. Bergemann graduated from Sargent College of Boston and taught at Alliance High School and Mount Union College.
She later taught at Millers Airport in North Benton, and was previously employed by Burden/Glenn Electric.
A member of First United Presbyterian Church since 1930, she served as a Sunday school teacher, nursery volunteer, deacon and elder.
She was a past president of the Alliance YWCA, former president of AMI of Alliance, Ohio (Advocates of the Mentally Ill), and seven year member of the board of trustees for AMI. An eight year member of the board of trustees of the Stark County Community Mental Health Board, she received the President's Award for service to families.
Mrs. Bergemann was a charter member of the board of trustees for the Alliance Friendship Center, a recreation center for the handicapped and lonely.
She was a nominee in 1991 and 1992 to the Ohio Stark County Women's Hall of Fame.
Mrs. Bergemann was a W.W.II Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) veteran, and was inducted into the Amelia Earhart International Forest of Friendship at Atchison, Kansas in June, 1993, and her name was inscribed in the front walkway at the Amelia Earhart birthplace museum.
She was chosen pilot of the year by the North East Ohio Pilots Association, attended the WASP 50th reunion in Washington, D.C. in Oct. 1994 and registered as a charter member in the Women in Military Service Memorial. She was a member of the International Women's Air and Space Museum in Centerville, Ohio, and was awarded "Pilot of the Year" in Oct. 1994 by the Lake Erie Chapter of the Ninety-Nines International. She continued to fly cross country attending 99's Section meetings, and in 1997, flew to Atchison, Kansas as part of the "Flight of Honor" for Amelia Earhart's 100th birthday celebration.
Mrs. Bergemann is mentioned in several books, including "Women Pilots of W.W.II", written by her classmate Jean Hascall Cole. It is the story of their WASP class of 44-W-2. She is also mentioned in "Clipped Wings", by Dr. Molly Merryman, director of the Women's Resource Center at Kent State University, and in the book, "On Final Approach".
Survivors include three daughters Christena Ann Bergemann of Canton, Jennie Louise Bergemann of Chicago, Illinois, and Nancy Jo Snee of North Canton, one son William E. Bergemann Jr. of Essen, Germany, and two granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Phyllis White and one brother Glenn.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
