Cornelius E. Edwards, Jr., age 84, of Alliance, died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born April 29, 1927, in Winona, W. Va., to Cornelius Sr. and Pearl (Agee) Edwards.
Cornelius was retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service and also pastored at the Dunham Avenue Christian Church in Cleveland for 17 years.
He attended the First Christian Church and was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church in Alliance, superintendent of Sunday schools at East Mount Zion Baptist Church in Cleveland, and past president of the committee to improve community relations in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Cornelius was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores (Duling) Edwards, whom he married September 3, 1949; daughter, Deborah M. Edwards of Fairlawn; three sons, Cornelius III (Barbara Ruth) Edwards of Davie, Fla., Bruce (Bernadine) Edwards of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Steve (Barbara Joanne) Edwards of Gibsonia, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Mandy, Lenny, Larry, Richard, Steven, and Lisa; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Ann (Ali) Khan of La Palma, Calif., and Genevive Edwards of Moreno Valley, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Herbert, Kenneth, John, General and Jay, whom all were ministers; and two sisters, Audrey and Doris.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2011, at First Christian Church co-officiated by Pastor Pam Bruno and Sue DeHoff. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alliance Food Pantry, 215 E. Market St., Alliance, Ohio 44601.
