Dale A. Freshley, age 81 of Alliance, died suddenly Monday, January 24, 2005 in Aultman Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born August 5, 1923, to Elroy and Eva (Hazen) Freshley. He was a lifelong resident of Alliance, and graduated from Alliance High School in 1941. He joined the 801st Engineer Aviation Battalion in 1943 and served in the Pacific and the Azores, including Okinawa, building hospitals, runways, taxiways, ramps and roads. He was discharged in 1946.
Dale was self-employed as a residential contractor for most of his career, and built many fine custom homes in the area. He was also extremely active in the community. He was a charter member and past president of the Lexington Ruritan Club and District Governor for one year. He was a member and past president of the Marlington Board of Education for twelve years. He was member of the Carpenters Local Union #69 for 60 years. He was a volunteer fireman for both Lexington and Plain Township Fire Departments, and delivered Meals on Wheels.
He was a member of the Lexington and Greenbower (past president) PTAs. He was a dedicated blood donor, and gave 18 gallons of blood in his lifetime.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church (Marlboro Methodist Church prior to 1967) for more than 50 years, where he served on various committees and advisory boards and worshipped regularly
He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara (Linerode) Freshley, whom he married on March 20, 1945. He is also survived by six daughters: Kathryn Dixon, Deborah (Steve) Daskalov, Beth (Lee) Gray, all of Alliance, Barbara Freshley of Akron, Amy (Jeff) Lebkeucher of Ashland City, Tenn., and Jill (Aaron) McQueen of Canton; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Helen Hagan and Dorothy Davis, and son-in-law Jim Dixon.
He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family and friends, sharing memories, music, good jokes and eating ice cream and chocolate. He was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan. He was well loved and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Saturday January 29 at Noon. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association, and the Salvation Army.
