Daniel M. Gorman, age 52, of Hartville, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Bucyrus Community Hospital.
He was born July 22, 1958, in New York to William and Agayla (Schteppa) Gorman.
Gorman joined the Mount Union community in 1985 after having served as assistant professor and director of the athletic training education program and head athletic trainer at State University of New York (SUNY)-Cortland. During his tenure at Mount Union, he was integral to the success of the University's athletic training education program, which recently received the maximum 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). He was also a dedicated mentor in the LS 100 program, which is designed to assist first-year students in their transition to college.
Dan served many teams at Mount Union, primarily football in the past, and currently the wrestling and men's soccer teams.
A native of Westbury, NY, Gorman earned an associate of arts degree in liberal arts with emphasis in physical education from SUNY - Morrisville in 1978, a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with emphasis in adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation from Eastern Illinois University in 1983. Gorman received his certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association in 1981.
Gorman also previously served as assistant director of sports medicine and research at the King Abdul Azizz Air Base in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia through work with the United States Sports Academy, head athletic trainer for the Gary, IN Golden Bears semi-pro football team and coordinator of sports medicine for the Michigan City, IN public school system while on the staff of Michigan City Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Gigi (Smith) Gorman of Hartville, whom he married January 7, 1984; children, Eric of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mike of West Point, New York, Jessie and Matt of the home; his mother, Agayla Gorman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; siblings, Mary (Gene) Stenov, Ellen (Chris) Gorman-Martinez, Patti Gorman and Vickie Leptourgas, all of Tampa, Fla. and Eugene (Lynn) Gorman of Congers, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A Memorial and Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011, in the Timken Gymnasium of the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex with Marty Cash Burless officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, January 15, in Myers Sanctuary of Dewald Chapel at the university.
