On Monday, July 22, 2013, we were sad to lose one of Alliances' most active and loyal residents, as she began her "new" adventure. DeLoris "Dodo" (Mathey) Barret, wife of former Mount Union player and coach, Eugene "Duke" Barret, died of heart issues at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring.
Mrs. Barret was born December 18, 1928, in Youngstown, to Joseph Henry Mathey and Alice (Haney) Mathey.
Mr. and Mrs. Barret were married July 8, 1949, in Youngstown and lived in White Hollow near the Mount Union Football stadium. After a few years in Gunnison, Colorado, they returned to the city that she loved for so many years to come. The couple resided on Seneca Ave. from 1957 to 1975 then moved to Vincent St. from 1976 to 2010.
She served as a longtime preschool teacher at the Union Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was a very active lifelong member and served as a board member for the Interfaith Day Care Center from 1975 to 1995. She was also very active with the YWCA (volunteer of the year) and delivered Meals on Wheels from 1983 to 2004. Mrs. Barret was a member of Coterie, Sorosis, Socrates and Hills and Dales Garden Club, as well as many other city organizations.
Most people, however, will remember her as one of the biggest fans of the Purple Raiders, Cleveland Browns and any teams for which her grandsons played! Her bright smile, generous heart, amazing grace and unedited passions for family, sports, politics, and travel, and her faith and love of life and for all people of the world, will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Barret is survived by her husband, Duke, now of Copeland Oaks; sister, Marilyn Horton of "The Villages", Fla.; daughters, Vicki Barret (Dale) Herbert of Louisville and Christi Lyn Barret of Annapolis, Md; grandchildren, Daniel Herbert of Virginia Beach, Va; Jonathon (Lauren) Herbert of Duluth, Minn, and Mathew (Brandi) Herbert of Alliance; and great-grandson, Isaac of Alliance.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sheila Rae Barret; and a sister, Carol Mathey Ballew.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DeLoris Mathey Barret scholarship fund for Early Education Majors, c/o Sherrie Wallace-Office of Advancement, the University of Mount Union, 1972 Clark Ave. Alliance, OH 44601, Lakota Native American Youth, CRYP Program, Box 410, E.
