Dempsey Arvil Knipp Sr., age 89 of Alliance, died at his home Friday April 8, 2005 at 6:20 p.m. following a long illness.
He was born in Grahn, Kentucky, on March 8, 1916 to William L. and Minta Lou (Barker) Knipp.
Dempsey lived in Lawrence County, Ohio during most of his youth. He married Nettie L. Dean in 1936. They moved to Alliance in 1941. He worked for several companies including the brickyard, Transue and Williams, Stewart Brothers Paints, Galvanaw Steel, United Co-Op, Babcock and Wilcox Rush Street Plant, and retired in 1978 from the Terex Division of General Motors.
He served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. Dempsey was also a farmer, carpenter, golfer and musician. He sang and played the guitar. During the 1950's, he had a band "The Circle K Ranch Hands".
He was a member of Maranatha Church of God. He was also a member of the U.A.W. Local 750.
Survivors include his wife, Nettie, two daughters; Mrs. Chester (Gladys) Bryant of Alliance, and Mrs. Charles (Cathern) Turner of Arizona, four sons; Rev. Donald (Susan) Knipp of Mentor, Dempsey (Marti) Knipp Jr. of Lake Milton, Phillip Knipp of Lisbon, and James (Patti) Knipp of Atwater, sisters, Mrs. Clair (Reathel) Walters and Mrs. Jack (Eathel) Payton, both of Alliance, and Mrs. Clayton (Susan) Bryant of Niles, brothers; Jess Knipp of Oklahoma and John (Delores) Knipp of Alliance, thirty-one grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, children, Carl, Hazel Aldridge and Jeannetta Jones, and four brothers; Clifford, Charles, Billy and Jack.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastors Jeffrey Caldwell and Delania Kaiser officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
