Donald E. Gantz Sr

Donald E. Gantz, Sr., age 85, of Alliance, passed away at 9:13 a.m., Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Rose Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation in Massillon.
He was born April 3, 1931, in Alliance, to Marion 'Arthur' and Dolly Isabelle (Funk) Gantz.
Don was a 1949 graduate of Alliance High School while working at Bonded Gas Station on E. Broadway. He then joined the U.S. Air Force obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Japan and Columbus during the Korean Conflict, working as a radar technician.
After honorably serving his country, Don worked as a production engineer for Goodyear Aerospace until his retirement in 1988. During this time he accepted a transfer to West Germany to work on USAF missile projects. He continued this work for 3 ½ years in Orlando and had a national security clearance during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
A caring husband and father, he served as treasurer for the Marlington High School Band Boosters, was a 33rd degree Mason in the Alliance Shrine Club, and attended the Alliance Friends Church.
He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, Mount Union football and spending time with his family, especially the many trips to Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Margaret (Sanor) Gantz; sons, Donald E. (Bernadette) Gantz, Jr. of Florida and William (Ida) Gantz of Shadyside, OH; step children, Glenn and Steven Schieben and Shelley Griffiths; four grandchildren; six step grandchildren; one great grandchild; 8 step great grandchildren; and brother, Roger (Shirley) Gantz of Alliance.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Betty J. (McCoy) Gantz, whom he married November 25, 1955 and who passed away August 31, 1993.
Services will be held at Noon Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to Noon prior to the service. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Aultman Hospice, 2821 Woodlawn Ave. N.W., Canton, OH 44708.
