Donald W. Shem Sr., age 87 of Alliance, died at 4:36 a.m. March 16, 2006 at Country Lawn Nursing Home in Navarre.
He was born Dec. 2, 1918 in Alliance, Ohio to William Ellsworth Shem and Ella Faye (Garrett) Shem and lived in Alliance most of his life.
A 1937 graduate of Alliance High School, Mr. Shem was the co-owner of Shem Paint and Wallpaper, which was founded in 1949, and formerly known as Myron White Wallpaper Store.
He was a member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church and a former member of Conrad Masonic Lodge #271 F&AM of Alliance.
Mr. Shem was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran, having served during W.W. II.
He is survived by his wife, Arletta L. (Lambert) Shem, whom he married Aug. 27, 1941; two daughters, Sarah Andrews of Willoughby, Ohio, and Kathryn O'Conner of Westerville, Ohio; one son, Donald W. (Jane) Shem Jr., of Massillon, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, three sisters, Louise Shem Wilcoxon, Eloise Shem, and Lucille Shem, and one brother, Charles Shem.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Case officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
