Don E. McAlister, age 92, of Alliance, went to his heavenly home on May 5, 2019 following a long illness.
He was born September 20, 1926, in Marlboro Township to Carl E. and Gladys (Miller) McAlister.
Don was raised on the family farm in Marlboro Township where he learned about hard work and creative problem solving.
Don was drafted at the end of World War II into the 104th Weather Group in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Macon, Georgia.
A 1944 graduate of Marlboro High School, Don graduated from Mount Union College and the University of Akron Law School.
He was a life resident of Marlboro Township, owner and president of Clem Lumber, and also an attorney. He served more than 30 years on both the Alliance Community Hospital Board and the Marlington Board of Education; taking great personal pride in working on committees that maintained buildings and grounds and used his career knowledge of building materials to benefit the community. He always had time for family and friends and contributed his time, talents and resources to every organization he supported.
Don and Rose enjoyed many years of traveling, visiting multiple states, including his favorite beach in Fort Myers, Florida, and countries, Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, and the Caribbean Islands. He enjoyed reading, especially about his family history, politics, and watching the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State football. He loved attending school activities of his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a former member of Wednesday Breakfast Club, the Stark County Republican Party, treasurer for the New Baltimore Cemetery Association, treasurer/trustee of the New Baltimore Athletic Club, Marlington Alumni Association, UCT, Stark County Bar Association, Ohio Bar Association, Clan McAlister of America and the Ulster Historical Foundation.
Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia McAlister; sons, James (Melisha) McAlister and David (Janet) McAlister; grandchildren, Michael (Shelly) McAlister, Douglas (Aubrey) McAlister, Ann (David) Bossert, and Jessica (Eric) Francis; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose F. McAlister, whom he married April 23, 1949 and who died April 27, 2016; brothers Carl and Wayne McAlister and sisters, Wilma Hufford and Margaret Shoemaker.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Nancy Manner officiating.
Friends may call Monday from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
