Dr. George David Spiker, age 68, of Sebring, died of complications from diabetes at 3:20 a.m. December 19, 2010 at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1942 in Canton, Ohio to George D. and Mary E. (Allenbaugh) Spiker.
George received his B.S. from Mount Union College; his Masters of Combined Science from the University of Mississippi and Education Doctorate from the University of Akron.
Mr. Spiker taught math for seven years at Sandy Valley High School, was Supervisor for Stark County Schools for four years, spent seventeen years as Principal at Magnolia Elementary School, and twelve years as Elementary Principal in the James A. Garfield School District, retiring in 2005.
Dave leaves a legacy of love, laughter, music, and excellence in education.
A member of the Sebring United Methodist Church, George was a certified lay speaker and enjoyed singing and playing the piano. He coached high school baseball and junior high basketball at Sandy Valley schools, where he was Past President of Sandy Valley Education Association, Past President of Stark County Administrators.
He was a member of various Lions Clubs since 1969, including Magnolia, Windham, Garrettsville, and current member of the Sebring Lions Club; he was past zone chairman in District 13-D for four terms, and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship; and was a member of the musical comedy group, B.U.G.s. since 1967.
George enjoyed golfing, reading, and collecting baseball cards, stamps and coins.
Survivors include his wife, Rev. Elizabeth June (Wheeler) Spiker, whom he married Dec. 19, 1964; one son, George Daniel (Laura) Spiker of Mogodore; one daughter, Elizabeth Kay (Mikio) Olin of Athens, five grandchildren, Brittany, Mercedes, Emi, Zen and Tristan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, James Bruce Spiker.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 24, 2010, at Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks with Chaplain David Parry and Rev. George Schreckengost officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. A Lion's Club Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Sebring Grandview Cemetery.
