Dr. William Adamson Sloan

William Adamson Sloan, age 77, of Alliance, OH, passed away at 6:56 a.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on January 27, 1939, in Dayton, OH, to Norton Quincy Sloan and Catharine (Aulabaugh) Sloan.
William graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH, in 1957 and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME, in 1961. He obtained a Masters in Astrophysics in 1964 and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and Solar Physics in 1966 from Yale. In addition, he obtained a Masters in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
William conducted doctoral research at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. from 1964-1966 and post-doctoral research in Honolulu, HI, in Solar Physics from 1966-1968. He then came to Mount Union College in 1968 where he served as an Associate Professor until 1981. From 1981-1995, William worked at the Alliance Research Center. He then worked as a consultant before retiring in 2002. After retiring, William pursued his passion for piano tuning from 2004-2014.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia, OH. He also was a member of the Piano Technician's Guild and Gideons International.
Survivors include his wife, Hannah Kathy (Dosa) Sloan, whom he married on August 5, 1979; sons, William Adamson Sloan, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, and James Emery Sloan of New York, NY; brother, Norton Quincy Sloan and his wife, Sandra (Sampson) Sloan of Ipswich, MA.; nephews, Norton Q. Sloan III of Sydney, Australia, and Stephen Sloan of Belmont, MA; niece, Laura Sloan of Newton, MA, and cousins, John Aulabaugh of Centerville, OH, and Ann Aulabaugh of Groton, CT.
Preceding him in death were his father in 1946, his mother in 2001, and his sister, Elizabeth Pope Sloan Riddle, in 2012.
William was kind, hard-working, generous, exceptionally gifted, and a devout Christian. He cared tremendously for his wife and was an incredible role model for his children. All who knew William admired him for his resilient strength, fortitude, and positivity as he fought cancer since 2014.
A Memorial Service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 E. High St., New Philadelphia, OH, on Friday, April 15, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Stephen Patrick and Pastor Haldon Robarge officiating.
A private burial will be held at Alliance City Cemetery.
