Earl Himmelheber, age 78, of Alliance, passed away, Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at the Cleveland Clinic.
He was born August 6, 1936, in West Palm Beach, Florida, to Melvin Dallas and Mabel (Stephenson) Himmelheber.
Earl was a West Palm Beach High School Graduate a graduate of Lynchburg College in Virginia, followed by a three year education at Lexington Theological Seminary, earning his Ministerial Degree. He served Disciples of Christ Christian Churches in Kentucky and Ohio before choosing to make teaching his career, starting with 5th grade Math and Science at Lexington Elementary School and moving into the new Marlington Middle School in 1970. While there he was teaching 6th grade Math, Science and Language Arts from time to time. Flag Football was coached by him after school each season.
A loyal member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, he was very involved with the church on Main Street and later on Beech Street here in Alliance. Earl loved music and sang for years with the choir and, later, operated the sound system during the second worship service at the new location on Beech Street. Being a member of the Outreach Committee, the Site Committee, the Capital Campaign Committee, the Christian Men's Fellowship, the Board of Elders, and the Church History Committee was his calling.
Wood working and Knife Collecting were his hobbies. He designed, repaired, and built furniture, collected "old wood", restoring it to its' original sheen and luster. he was a master "repair person" of "injured" items, including jewelry.
As a member of Western Reserve of Ohio Cutler Association, he collected "whitler" and German-made knives, attending monthly meetings and many Shoes and Expos.
Our animal pets always found a place on his lap or chest when he was napping or enjoying television. That is, until the grandchildren came along.
As a founding member of the Habitat for Humanity Organization in Alliance, he helped build homes here in town, and formerly traveled to New York and Pennsylvania with church members to build for Habitat.
Survivors include his wife, Diana (Martin) Himmelheber whom he married August 24, 1961; daughter, Karen Himmelheber, currently living in Brussels, Belgium, son, Eric (JoDee) Himmelheber of Alliance, grandchildren, Brock, Blane, Segen, and Beau; sister, Carolyn Himmelheber, and brother, David (Mari) Himmelheber, both of West Palm Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 19, 2015, at First Christian Church with Pastor Aaron Phillips officiating. Friends may call at First Christian Church from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2015, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
