Edward Bieri

Edward Nile Bieri, age 87, of Alliance, passed away at his son's home at 3:06 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009.
He was born December 1, 1921 in Alliance, Ohio to Edward Earle Bieri and Edna Minerva Nile Bieri. Ed lived in Alliance his entire life and graduated from Alliance High School.
Mr. Bieri retired as Manager for the local Ohio Bell Operations in 1983 after 43 years of service. Ed was an active member of the First Immanuel United Church of Christ.
He was past Commander of the American Legion Post 166, and was currently active with the Ohio Bell Pioneers and former member of Rotary. An avid golfer and talented watercolorist, Ed was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and had recently attended the re-dedication of the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Monument in Washington, DC with members of the 3rd Marine Division Association.
Ed served in World War II as a Corporal and field radio operator in Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion of the 3rd Regiment of the 3rd Division of the US Marine Corps; he was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation after combat at Bougainville in the British Solomon Islands and was awarded Presidential Unit Citations at Guam in the Marshall Islands, and also at Bougainville.
Survivors include his daughter, Christine Bieri and her husband, Eric Hovemeyer, of Cincinnati; son, Jim Bieri of Alliance; and grand-daughter, Miranda Hovemeyer of Denver, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty J. (Shreves) Bieri whom he married March 17, 1945 and who died September 9, 2004; his son, David Earle Bieri in 2000; his daughter-in-law, Carol Lintern Bieri in 2005; sisters, Dorothy Lippert, Fay Brown and Jane Bieri.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Neal Mann officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alliance Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 885 S. Sawburg Ave. Suite 106, Alliance, Ohio 44601, or to the First Immanuel United Church of Christ, 208 E. Oxford St. Alliance, Ohio 44601.
Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave. Alliance, Ohio.
