Edward Hillman, Sr., age 82, of Alliance, died at his home at 1:52 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008.
He was born July 21, 1925 in Akron, Ohio, to Joseph and Jane V. (Hribar) Hillman. Edward and his wife Ruth moved to Alliance in 1960.
Mr. Hillman was a U.S. Navy WWII Veteran, and while serving in Hawaii in 1944, was promoted for repairing the airplane which was used by the Secretary of the Navy.
He was employed as a diesel truck mechanic for the former Motor Freight Co. and then by Kuntzman Trucking until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local #92 in Akron.
A very encouraging and supportive father and grandfather who showed his love in ways of generosity; he enjoyed and had pride in seeing his family live life to the fullest. He enjoyed hunting and water sports, but most of all flying.
Survivors include his sons, Edward (Sandra) Hillman Jr. of Alliance and Hugh Hillman of Hanoverton; daughter, Shannon (Allan) Strzala of Alliance; step-son, Rick F. (Kathy) Hillman of Canal Fulton, Ohio; step-daughter Terrie (Ray) Foley of Tampa, FL; granddaughter, Lexi Strzala; step-granddaughter, Heather Hillman Hart; brother, Joseph (Connie) Hillman of Piedmont, AL and sister, Josephine (Jim) Caughron of Akron.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruth (Ferrell) Hillman whom he married May 3, 1960 and who died February 6, 2006. Ed and Ruth met through their love of roller-skating. Ruth was a competitive skater who won many medals and judged competitions. Ed skated very well also, which is what caught Ruth's eye.
Per Ed's request, a private service was held surrounded by the ones who were there for him in his final days. Interment was at Highland Memorial Park.
