Ellen Mainwaring passed away August 12, 2009 at the Canterbury Villa in Alliance, where she had been a resident since October, 2005.
Ellen Nedra Mainwaring was born May 1, 1922 in Alliance, to William Peter Dailey and Tressa Ziccardi Dailey. A 1940 graduate of Alliance High School, she was the 1939 football homecoming queen. Ellen was a life-long resident of Alliance who was involved in many community activities, including the Qui Vive, the Alliance Women's Club, the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, the YWCA and the Alliance Historical Society. She accepted leadership roles with enthusiasm and valued the friendships of those who worked with her on various committees. She also enjoyed baking cookies for her friends and family.
Ellen was an unabashed supporter of the Republican Party and worked at the city and county level supporting Republican candidates. She was a past president of the Alliance Republican Club. Those who knew of her devotion to the Republican Party offered many additions to her collection of elephant figurines and jewelry.
She enjoyed working as an optician, first for Dr. Christopher King, and most recently until her retirement for Dr. Richard T. McFall.
She was a member of the Alliance First United Presbyterian Church.
Ellen married her high school sweetheart, William H. Mainwaring on January 23, 1942. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1991. Also preceding her in death on October 3, 1991 was her daughter Leslie Jo Mainwaring Bourne.
She is survived by her son, William (Sally) Mainwaring of Salem; son-in-law, Richard Bourne of Alliance; and her sister Mary Jayne Fulop of Alliance. Ellen is also survived by her grandchildren, Tracey Shaw of Huntsville, Alabama, Christopher Bourne of North Canton; Susan and David Mainwaring of Salem; and four great-grandsons.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at the First United Presbyterian Church with Pastor James McCurdy officiating. There will be no calling hours.
