Elsie M. Fitzgerald, age 86, of Alliance, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at McCrea Manor.
She was born November 1, 1922 in Alliance to Wesley and Anna (England) Edwards and was a lifetime Alliance resident.
A 1939 graduate of Alliance High School, Elsie went on to earn her degree in Nursing at St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1944. She was a Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics Department at Alliance City Hospital for thirty years till her retirement in 1986.
Elsie was a life member of the American Legion and DAV, Alliance Retired Nurses and Sonshiners at Beechwood Christian Church where she was a member since 1987. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and loved taking care of babies. During World War II she was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
Survivors are her daughters, Jo (Charles) Devan of Dayton, Judith (Allan) Swift, and Barbara (Mark) Reay, both of Alliance; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother George Edwards of Homeworth; and a sister Zella Worley of Kensington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert Peck in 1945 and Joseph Fitzgerald, whom she married May 7, 1945 and who died October 26, 1992; brothers Calvin E. Edwards and Carl Edwards; and a sister Gwen Phillips.
Services, conducted by Allan Swift and Mark Reay, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
Entombment with Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Alliance at Highland Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alliance Community Hospital, 200 East State St. Alliance, Ohio, 44601.
