Elton Ross Arris, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 10:50 a.m. in Alliance, and entered into the kingdom of his Lord. He was born October 29, 1929 in Steubenville Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army and in the Army Reserves from 1951 to 1973, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He worked as a wood pattern maker at American Steel Foundry in Alliance for 39 years and was a member of the 25 Year Club A.S.I., serving as Secretary, 1st Vice President and President.
He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alliance, where he served on church council, Sunday school superintendent, a member of Men's Bible Class and Club 55. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and Post #166 of the American Legion for 30 years. He was also a member of the Alliance Lions Club, serving as president in 1977, and had perfect attendance for 30 years. For his many services, he was a recipient of the Lion of the Year Award in 1991-92, and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1998, the highest honor given by Lions International. He was also a talented woodworker, creating countless fine pieces and projects for family and friends.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife Annetta L. Kirk Arris, whom he married on August 8, 1953 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church; his two daughters; BessAnn (Darrell) Sommers of Canton and Sara (Andrew) Smith of Columbus; three grandchildren Ross W. (Christina) Sommers, Logan J. Sommers and Alina Claire Smith, one great-grandchild, Caleb Ross Sommers; his sister, Audrey (Robert) Stine of Indianapolis, Indiana and many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his Monday morning men's breakfast club friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Henry and Diana Mae Arris; his brother George Arris and his sister Marjorie Meehan.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Frank Gross Jr. officiating. Friends may call from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
