Esther Pauli Ailes

November 5, 1924 — February 5, 2018

Esther Pauli Ailes, age 93, of Alliance, passed away at 9:20 a.m., Monday, February 5, 2018, at Alliance Community Hospital.
She was born August 1, 1924, in Alliance, Ohio, to the late Jacob and Erma (Oswalt) Pauli.
Esther was raised on a farm on Route 619 and attended a one room school house called Union Grove, located just one-fourth of a mile from her home. She also attended Bolton School before graduating in June 1942 from Alliance High School.
She belonged to Eastern Star for 50 years and formerly worked at Alliance Manufacturing for eight years; taught 3 year olds at Union Avenue Church for seven years, and retired in 1990 after working as a salad maker in the Campus Center at Mount Union for twenty years.
Esther loved gardening, bird watching, taking pictures, and baking cookies and cakes which she loved to share. She also enjoyed hiking and swimming with her husband and grandchildren in the 1980s and 1990s.
Esther and her late husband Jim belonged to Salem First Friends Church on Jennings Avenue in Salem for 35 years.
Survivors include her sister-in-law and friend of 75 years, Helen Marie Pauli; many nieces and nephews, her grandchildren, Heather Shankle of Bothell, Washington, Theresa Ailes of Orlando, Florida, Tracey Ailes of Palm Bay, Florida, and Aaron Ailes of Canton, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Evan, Tyler, and Kristen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her dear husband, James B. "Jim" Ailes, whom she married July 3, 1948, and who died March 27, 2011; son, Gregory Ailes, who died Nov. 3, 2005; daughter, Christine Ailes Jones, who died March 19, 2017; sisters, Helen Pauli Hazen, Thelma Pauli Saunier, and Phyllis Pauli Price, brother, Ivan "Pete" Pauli; brothers-in-law, Thomas Hazen, Richard Saunier, and Chuck Price, and nephews, Chuck Price and Ronald Price.
Per Esther's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Salem First Church at 1028 Jennings Avenue, Salem, Ohio 44460 to be used for the bell choir and music department, as Esther and Jim enjoyed their music.
