Ethel May Woolf, age 101 of Alliance, died at 6:50 a.m. Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born in Alliance, Ohio on March 23, 1903 to William and Annetta (Baith) Woolf.
Miss Woolf graduated in 1921 from Alliance High School. She earned her elementary teaching degree from Kent State in 1924 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Ohio University in 1928. She taught at South Lincoln in Alliance for two years.
For two years, she was Supervisor of Art at Ironwood, Michigan and authored the course of study for public school art. In 1933, she earned her Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Columbia University Teacher's College in New York City, followed by three years as Instructor of Art at DePaw University in Indiana and Art Supervisor in the Champaign, Illinois School District.
She moved to Athens, Ohio in 1936 and taught art at the Athens High School for 31 years. She was supervisor of Ohio University student teachers, helping them achieve competence in the techniques of teaching art. She taught students that they must use their own creative interpretation of a subject rather than copying that of another. Her influence in art education extended through the years as her students practiced her teachings in their own art classrooms.
She retired from teaching in Athens, Ohio in 1967 and moved into a Villa at Copeland Oaks Retirement Center in 1982. She has resided at Crandall Medical Center since 1997.
In 1989, the Athens High School Art Department was renamed the Ethel Woolf Art Suite in her honor.
She has traveled to every state in the Union, including Alaska and Hawaii. Her advice for a long life: "Always have a job to do, keep busy and travel as much as you can".
She is a former member of the Retired Teachers Association. Miss Woolf was a 50 plus year member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a member of the Hazel Spencer Circle.
Survivors include three nephews; William (Mildred) Woolf, Frank (Joan) Woolf, and Jack (LaVerne) Edwards.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Herbert W. Woolf and two sisters Rena Woolf Garman and Leta Woolf Edwards.
A private family service will be held at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. David Hostetler officiating.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks.
Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
