Eugene Rosco Barret was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1927 to Ersell and Lucille (Sadler) Barret, the youngest of 5 kids.
He was a 1945 graduate of Youngstown's South High school, where he excelled in football and basketball.
Duke served with the Army's 18th regiment 1945-1947 stationed in Germany.
He pitched baseball for the St.Louis Browns / Toledo Mudhens organization 1947-1948
Duke then attended Mount Union College, graduating in 1951 with a degree in English. He was 3 time All Ohio in football, and 2 time All Ohio in basketball.......also lettering all 4 years in track.
While at MUC he married DeLoris Mathey (of Youngstown Woodrow Wilson) in 1949 and lived in Vet housing, White Hallow, where the chapel now stands.
He taught and coached at Pomeroy, Ohio High School and Youngstown's East High School before taking an assistant coaching and teaching position at Colorado Western College under "Pete" Pederson, while completing his Masters there.
Duke then returned to his alma mater as head football coach, as well as golf and tennis 1956-1962.
He was head of public relations for the Alliance Drop Forging Co., 1962-1966, under Wayne Walter.
Duke then took a professorship at Youngstown State University from 1966-1992 reluctantly retiring from the job that he loved so much.
He was active in the Mt Union Alumni Association, Union Ave United Methodist Church, Alliance Country Club, Habitat for Humanity, YMCA, PFLAG and various other clubs and civic associations throughout the city. He loved his family, sports, music, dancing, teaching, serving others, and pie!
He was elected into the Mt Union Hall of Fame in 1976, and along with "Dodo", was a truly loyal supporter in all ways.
Duke's blood ran Raider Purple and Carnation City Red for the school and the city that he loved so much.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, "Dodo" Deloris Mathey Barret; sister, Janice Barret Cross; brothers, Duane Barret and Sheldon Barret; and daughters, Vicki Barret Herbert and Sheila Barret.
Duke is survived by his sister, Elaine Barret McClain of Austintown and Wilmington, NC; daughter, Christi Barret of Annapolis, MD; grandsons, Dan (Chelsea) Herbert, Jon (Lauren) Herbert and Matt (Brandy) Herbert; five beautiful great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Dale Herbert; numerous loving and loyal nieces and nephews from everywhere; and many beautiful friends, both locally and around the world.

A memorial service will be held at the University of Mount Union's Dewald Chapel on Saturday, Sept 2, at 9:30 a.m.
