Frances Louise Formby Walter, age 88, of Alliance, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born November 17, 1921, in Rome, Georgia, to Clark Howell and Tidie (Griffin) Formby.
Frances lived in Florida from six weeks of age until her marriage to Floyd C. Walter of Alliance, Ohio on April 18, 1948. Mr. Walter died on February 16, 1997, after 48 years of marriage.
A graduate of Eustis High School, Frances was the recipient of all three top awards given to a graduating senior girl, and remains the only student to ever do so.
She attended Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) and later studied at Stetson University and the University of Florida.
She worked in the Registrar's Office at Florida State College for Women and as an Elementary School Teacher in Florida for five years.
Over the years, Mrs. Walter volunteered as a Pink Lady at Alliance Community Hospital, Red Cross Canteen for Blood Donor Days, Den Mother and Secretary for Cub Scout Pack 170 of Washington Twp., and Treasurer of Sigma Nu Mother's Club.
A member of First Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, and was a member of the Alliance Woman's Club, Alliance Republican Club, Voters for Women, and former member of Postscript Club.
As a "Friend of Rotary", Frances was enormously proud of being given the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Survivors include her sons, Clark Wayne (Connie) Walter, Charlottesville, VA, F. Carl (Jo) Walter of Pepper Pike, and Kent William (Mary) Walter of Alliance; grandsons, Christian Walter of Bay Village, Skip (Laurie) Walter of Cleveland Heights, and Hunter Walter of Cleveland; granddaughter, Schuyler Walter of Pepper Pike; sister, Helen Formby (Clyde) Mosteller of Mt. Dora, Florida; nieces, Ruby Head Duffield, of Michigan, Tidie Head Itchon of Florida; and nephews, Ernie Mosteller of Florida and Dr. Thomas Head of North Carolina.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband of 48 years and sister, Agnes Formby Head.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Gordon Thomas officiating. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
