Genevieve I. Oyster, age 80, of Sebring, died at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at University Hospital in Cleveland.
She was born January 3, 1931, in Velke Kapusani, Czechoslovokia, to George and Anna (Koval) Varkonda.
She was a 1949 graduate of Alliance High School and attended Kent State University. She was formerly employed by Midland Buckeye Savings and Loan Association in Alliance and First National Bank Home Savings and Loan in Salem until her retirement. She later owned and operated Oyster Dairy Farms with her late husband, James.
Mrs. Oyster was a member of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church, member and past treasurer for Mile Branch Grange and the Sandhi Club. She would like to be remembered as happy and fun-loving; she traveled the world with her family and friends, enjoyed reading and gardening, and especially enjoyed the time spent with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughters, Patti Oyster and Holly (Russell Friend) Oyster, both of Alliance; son, Jay (Adrianna) Oyster of Sarasota, Florida; four grandchildren, Zoe Friend, 11, Athena Friend, 4, Liam Oyster, 5, and Lucas Oyster, 6 months old; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Albert Oyster, whom she married April 4, 1965 and who died September 13, 1990; two brothers, George and John; and two sisters, Anna Buckshaw and Betty Kendi.
A private family service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Joe Peters officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2011. A Mile Branch Grange service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday evening after the visitation. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers family requests memorial contributions be made to the Mile Branch Grange Scholarship Fund, 495 Knox School Road, Alliance, Ohio 44601, in memory of Genevieve Oyster.
