George Hampu Jr., age 91, of Alliance, passed away at Altercare of Alliance after an extended illness of Alzheimer's/Dementia on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, surrounded by his family.
George was born on September 27, 1926, in Alliance, Ohio, to the late George S. and Ana (Orzea) Hampu. His parents and sister immigrated from Scoreiu, Romania.
George was a graduate of Alliance High School and became a draftsman through Salem Trade School. He retired after more than 40 years from Morgan Engineering.
He was a lifetime member of both the St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church and the American Legion.
He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Corvus and received the Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal (1Star).
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved to golf. He took many trips to Nakina, Canada, with his buddies and brother-in-law, Glenn Francis. He held season tickets for many years to the Alliance football and basketball games.
He is survived by his wife, Norma June (Francis) Hampu of Alliance whom he married in 1952; three daughters, Susan Brown of Alliance, Barbara (David) McCain of Homeworth and Lisa (Bernie) Brown of Alliance. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael Brown and Sarah Brown, David (Allyssa) McCain, Andrew (Bethany) McCain and Matthew McCain, AnaMarie (Mosi) Dulaney and Daniel Brown. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Nick) Dan.
Friends and family will be received at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home on Friday, April 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. which will include a Saracusta Service at 7:30. A funeral service will take place Saturday, April 28th at the St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church with Rev. Father John Nemes at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at the Alliance City Cemetery.
