George Jorney, age 89, of Alliance, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born February 26, 1927, on the family farm near New, Philadelphia, Ohio to Andrew and Elizabeth (Johnson) Jorney.
George was a 1945 graduate of Alliance High School. A United States Army Veteran, he served in the Allied-Occupation of Germany from 1945-1948 at the rank of Second and then First Lieutenant. In Germany he was in command of a trucking company. Upon returning to Alliance after his service, George attended Mount Union College in 1948 and 1949.
In the 1950's, he worked in various area factories including Mullins Manufacturing Corporation in Salem as a product quality inspector and at the Alliance Manufacturing Co. as an engineer where he met his future wife, Violet.
George was always an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman in his younger years. In 1950, he started raising mink on a modest scale with his brother-in-law, Chet Kridler and after 61 years, George retired from the Jorney Mink Ranch in 2011.
George was a member of St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church for 58 years, and Knox Township Ruritan club. In retirement, he loved spending time outdoors, gardening, bird watching, still mowing his 3-acre lawn, small construction projects, and reading.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Violet (Hampu) Jorney; son, Jeffrey (Jim Govoni) of Bowie Maryland; daughter, Justine Ostadali (Allen) of Homeworth; one grandchild, Elizabeth Ostadali; his sisters, Julia Strazi of Massillon, Ann Bell of New Mexico, and Helen Kridler, of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and siblings, Mike, Walter and Thomas Jorney.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016, at St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church 1621 S. Sawburg Ave. Alliance, OH 44601 with Rev. Father John Nemes officiating. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 30 2016, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance OH 44601 where a Saracusta service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation 269 Hanover Street, Building 3 Hanover, Massachusetts 02339, the St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, PO Box 2052, Alliance, Ohio 44601, or to a charity of your choice.
