Gerhard F. Wachsmuth, age 76, of Homeworth, passed away on Oct. 20th at Alliance Community Hospital after a short illness due to cancer.
He was born Feb. 23, 1931 in Homberg, Germany to the late Karl and Amalie (Hartwig) Wachsmuth.
Surviving are his spouse, Evelyn Lee (Rardon) Wachsmuth, whom he married June 16, 1956, daughter, Heidi Muica and her husband Sorin Muica and three grandchildren, Stephen, Adrian and Melody Muica, all of Massillon; one brother Heinrich of Dresden, Germany and one sister, Elfriede, also of Germany; six nieces and nephews, numerous cousins in Germany, and three cousins in Ohio; Evelyn (Stanton) Atterholt of Loudonville, Eleanore (Glenn) Stitzlein of Jeromesville, and Margarete Crumlik of Ashland.
He was preceded in death by his son, David Karl, in July 2007.
Gerhard came to this country in 1951, sponsored by his uncle, Pastor Carl Hartwig, former pastor of Science Hill Church. He became a U.S. citizen while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and Austria from 1954-1956. He was employed at the Alliance Machine Company until July, 1959, when he joined the Equitable Life Insurance Company (now American General) and made this his career. His customers remember him as honest and trustworthy, as evidenced by the calls for advice and friendly greetings in public, long after his disability retirement in 1990. He received many trophies, trips and honors for his exceptional knowledge of the insurance industry as an agent and staff manager.
In earlier years, he enjoyed traveling back to Germany to visit relatives, as well as camping across the northern and southern United States and Canada with his young family. His favorite destination was Niagara Falls, Canada. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Louisville.
Private family services will be held following cremation. His ashes and those of his son, David, will be interred together at Salem Greenlawn Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home.
