Gloria Mae (Gang) Schmitt, age 89, of Alliance, passed away at 10:10 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Alliance Community Hospital following a short illness.
Born October 20, 1925, to Robert and Irene (Hilbert) Gang, she resided in Alliance her entire life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Delpha (Starkey) Gang; and daughter, Elizabeth Schmitt.
Surviving are her daughters, Linda Mohr Hager of Erwin, Tennessee and Judy Mohr Collins of Alliance; sons, John Mohr of Ringgold, Georgia, Michael Mohr of Rockledge, Florida, Robert (Bonnie) Mohr of Alliance and Gregory (Nancy) Mohr of New Castle, Pennsylvania; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
Music was Mom's passion in life. She was an avid reader, and loved crossword puzzles. Her hobbies were knitting and sewing.
In her earlier years, she sang on WFAH radio and in her church choir. She attended Fred Waring Choral Workshop in Pennsylvania where she learned to direct music, subsequently directing the Mother Singers of the North Lincoln School PTA and the local chapter of Sweet Adelines.
She was a "Rosie the Riviter" during World War II, and operated a crane at Babcock and Wilcox Tube, but was a waitress most of her life, working at Jeanettes and Fitzpatricks and retired from Perkins to care for her daughter, Elizabeth, who had MS.
The family would like to thank Dr. Karamjit Bhullar, Dr. Ashraf Ahmed and all the nurses and members of Alliance Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
At her request, there will be no funeral or calling hours. Following cremation, she will be interred at Alliance City Cemetery with a private memorial service.
