Harold Sweitzer

October 4, 1916 — April 25, 2008

Harold B. "Hal" Sweitzer, age 91, of Sebring, died at 1:52 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2008 at Aultman Hospital in Canton.
He was born, October 4, 1916 in Marlboro, Ohio to Benjamin and Bessie (Haidet) Sweitzer and lived in the Alliance-Marlboro area his whole life.
Hal graduated from the former Marlboro High School in 1934 and was manager of the former Sweitzer China Co., later worked for Republic Steel in Canton and retired from Alliance Manufacturing as a credit manager in 1980.
He was a member of the Alliance First Christian Church and former member of the Alliance Country Club.
In 1956 at the age of 40 he became interested in oil painting as a hobby and had painted landscapes and seascapes as an avocation. He demonstrated and exhibited his art in Ohio and Pennsylvania for many years and as a result had many trophies and ribbons to his credit. He taught art classes at the Alliance Art Center at Mt. Union College and at his home. Hal's enthusiasm for the sea had resulted in many seascapes of various moods from both the East and West Coasts. He also painted many subjects in Europe. He gave many of his oil paintings to Copeland Oaks upon his move there with his wife, Ruth Sweitzer.
He was always interested in sports, playing baseball, football, basketball, golf and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Smith) Sweitzer of Sebring, whom he married July 20, 1988; a daughter, Vicki (Marty) Haynes of Fairfax, VA and two step-daughters, Judith K. Warren of Canton and Jeri Warren of Elgin TX; two stepsons,Jeff R. (Mary) Brown of Beijing, China and Todd K. (Penny) Brown of Light House, TX; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Myrtle (McLlaufin) Sweitzer in 1948 and Melba (Warren) Sweitzer.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with Sue DeHoff officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
