Herbert Lee Gorby

December 26, 1927 — February 5, 2018

Herbert Lee Gorby, age 90, passed away quietly Monday February 5, 2018 at his home.
He was born December 26, 1927, in East Palestine, Ohio, to Warren G. and Martha (Whitehouse) Gorby.
He graduated from East Palestine High School in 1945, where he was an outstanding athlete. He earned 12 letters in football, basketball and track. As a fullback, he scored 19 touchdowns his senior year and was the leading scorer in the state.
While competing in the annual track and field events, he became an outstanding competitor in the 100, the 200 and the shot put.
After enrolling at Ohio State University in the fall of 1945, he earned a letter his freshman year, where he was the second youngest player at the age of 17 to ever play for the Buckeyes.
A knee injury forced him to withdraw from Ohio State University. He later transferred to Baldwin Wallace College where he received his degree in education. He accepted a teaching-coaching position at Minerva High School. He also assisted in coaching at Western Reserve and Youngstown Universities. He was principal-coach at Goshen High School for five seasons, and then left the education field for 17 years, working in the real-estate development business. In 1974 he accepted the position as principal of East Liverpool High School until his retirement after which he continued in real-estate development.
Herb loved Ohio State University his whole life, and never missed watching a football game. He enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren, playing cards, golfing and going to races with his friends. In later years, he loved growing tomatoes, buying fresh produce, and sharing them with his friends.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce (Herren) Gorby; son, Dr. Gary L. Gorby of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Jill (Jimmy) Weir of Seneca, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Connor Gorby of Omaha, Nebraska, Hunter Gorby of Arlington, Virginia, Joseph Weir of Seneca, South Carolina, Jeffrey Weir of Winston-Salem, South Carolina and Jordan Weir of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by two sisters, Carol (Bruce) Weber of Greensboro Georgia and Norma Ferrall of Columbiana, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
