Hugh I. Jae, age 74, died suddenly Saturday, March 18, 2006 while visiting in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Mr. Jae graduated in 1949 from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio and from Mount Union College in 1954.
After graduating from Mount Union he returned to Stow to run the famed Smorgasbord Restaurant in Stow, Ohio begun by his mother. In 1955 he was drafted into the U.S. Army serving a tour of duty in what was then West Germany. He returned as the owner of the Smorgasbord Restaurant in 1957. Subsequently, he decided to pursue a career in teaching. After receiving a master's degree in French from Kent State University he returned to Mount Union in 1962 as professor of French.
Further studies included French at Laval University in Quebec, Canada and the Sorbonne in Paris, France. He was pursuing a doctoral degree at Case Western Reserve when he left his teaching position to join the administrative staff and initiated the first Co-Operative Education Program at Mount Union College.
As an inductee into the Mt. Union Football Hall of Fame, he continued his passion volunteering regularly with the football program at Mount Union. Members of the Alliance Country Club will remember Hugh's true passion as golf.
After retiring from the College in 1999, he was enjoying an extremely rewarding second career as a sales associate with General Commercial Corporation.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Nancy S. Jae, his son, Jeffery A. Jae (Elizabeth) and his grandsons, Ryan Jae, David Jae, and Sam Jae, the son of the late Bradley Jae. He was preceded in death by his son Bradley who had died eighteen days earlier.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund at Mount Union College, 1972 Clark Ave., Alliance, Ohio 44601, or Alliance Visiting Nurse Hospice Association, 885 S. Sawburg Ave., Ste. 106, Alliance, Ohio 44601. Hospice had been incredibly helpful during his son's battle with cancer and Hugh had become their unofficial spokesman.
A Memorial Service for Hugh and Bradley is planned for April 15th at 10:00 a.m. at the Dewald Chapel at Mount Union College.
