Ioana Hampu

Ioana Hampu, age 103 and two months, an 84 year resident of Alliance, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009 at Bel-Air Care Center, where she resided for the past 4 years.
She was born April 29, 1906 in Scorei, Romania (then part of Austria-Hungary) to Samoila and Paraschiva (Vulcu) Oancea. She married Andrew Hampu, also from Scorei, on January 15, 1925; he died on September 8, 1955. Mrs. Hampu immigrated to Alliance on December 12, 1925 and became a naturalized U. S. citizen on June 23, 1944.
Mrs. Hampu retired from the Alliance Manufacturing Co. in 1971 after 22 years of service. She has been a member of the St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church and the Romanian Union and League Society for 84 years and was involved in various roles during her lifetime.
Mrs. Hampu enjoyed spending time with all of her large family. Although she was less active in her later years, she was an avid gardener and canned much of the produce she grew. She also enjoyed cooking and baking traditional Romanian cuisine and doing traditional Romanian crafts, such as needlework, crochet and sewing. Surviving are her children: Mary (William) Nutial and Violet (George) Jorney of Alliance, and Janice (Ronald) Corbi of Columbiana. She has 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; her children Andrew Hampu, Elaine Harp, and George Hampu, who was the first soldier from Alliance to die in action in the Korean Conflict in 1950.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2009 at St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church with Rev. Father Pantelimon Stanciu officiating. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. A Saracusta Service will be held Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
