Jack Edwards, age 92, of Alliance, passed away at 1:50 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born June 6, 1921, in Alliance, to John H. and Leta Ruth (Woolf) Edwards.
Jack was a graduate of Alliance High School and attended Mount Union College where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
He was employed in motor freight with Suburban Motor Freight Company and Pilot Freight Company for 38 years.
Jack was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for 80 years and past president of the Crusaders Sunday school class. In 2008 he was honored for 30 years service as a head usher.
He was an Alliance Lions Club member for over 25 years. Jack received awards for Lion of the Year in 2001-2002 for outstanding service, loyalty and devotion to Lionism and the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 2007-2008. Jack was also recognized as a top rose salesman for several years.
Jack was a member of the Boy Scouts, receiving an award for 25 years of dedicated service and recipient of the Wapakonachee District (1981) and the Boy Scout's Lexington Ruritans awards.
He was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II as a Tech 5, 339th engineer. He received three Battle Stars while serving in the Pacific Theatre.
Jack also loved traveling, camping and the outdoors.
Survivors include his beloved wife, LaVerne (Humphrey) Edwards whom he married July 1, 1950; daughter, Kathleen Tietz of Akron; son, Bob (Shelley) Edwards of Homeworth; three granddaughters, Dedrie Edwards of Alliance, Michelle Tietz of Akron and Rachel (Brandon) French of Sebring; two grandsons, Dylan and Chase Edwards, both of Homeworth; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dr. Robert W. Edwards.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2013, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Stephanie Lee and Rev. David Kowaleski co-officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home, with a Lion's Club Service at 5:30 p.m. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
