Jack Edwin Miller, age 94, of Alliance, passed away on August 14th, 2021.

Jack was owner, with his late wife, Joyann Miller, of the Jack and Joy Shoppe Children’s Clothing Store for 31 years.

Jack was born on April 16th, 1927 in Alliance to John and Beatrice (Walker) Miller.

He graduated from Alliance High School in 1945.  While attending high school, he worked for Stark’s Boston Store and the McCaskey Register Company.

Following graduation from high school, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the 9th Division Military Police in Germany.

Upon returning from military service, he graduated from Mount Union College with a Business Administration Degree in 1950.  He then worked at the Morgan Engineering Company in the Payroll Department.

In 1952, he married Joyann Stevenson and in 1953 they started the Jack and Joy Shoppe at Mt. Union Square and moved to 640 W. State Street in 1966 and remained there until retiring in 1984.

In 1978, he was honored as the State of Ohio Children’s Wear Buyer of the year.  In 2008, he was given the Mayor’s Award as Senior Citizen of the year.

Jack was a member of the Conrad Masonic Lodge, Sigma Nu Fraternity, Republican Club, and past Chairman of the Continued Learning Program at Mount Union University.

He was a former Jaycee and served on the board of the National Hot Stove League in its early years and as a local league president.  He served on Mayor Francis Carr’s campaign and advisory committees, the latter as chairman.

Jack was an amateur magician and gave free magic and other programs for churches, schools and senior organizations.  He also wrote poetry for numerous occasions as well as songs which he had put on a CD; many were played on the Alliance and university radio stations.  One song was dedicated to the Carnation Festival.

He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served as councilman, Sunday school superintendent and teacher and was a member of Club 55.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Janet (Randy) Hartzell and Judi Miller-Ince both of Alliance; grandchildren, Ryan Hartzell (Fiancée Nancy Drain), Brooke (Craig) Guiley, Kyle (Sara) and Luke Ince, step great grandchildren Aiden and Cam Guiley, and a good friend Maryann Ziegler.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joyann.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday, August 17th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Timothy Muse officiating and a visitation one hour prior. Interment will be held at Highland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 3295 S Union Ave, Alliance, OH 44601.
