Jack Smith, age 81, of Homeworth, died at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Bel-Air Care Center.
Jack was born in 1926, the son of David and Mary Smith and attended Alliance High School.
He worked many years in Auto Parts Sales, where he was known as "Smitty". He later worked a-ten year tenure with the Columbiana County Highway Department. Jack volunteered with the Stark County Mounted Sheriff's Auxiliary Reserve from 1957-1958.
A veteran of World War II, Jack was transferred to Nagasaki, Japan, serving on the Shoreline Patrol Unit. He was later transferred to Osaka, Japan where he was appointed Supervisor of the Group Vehicle Maintenance Div. H3608 Ord Tank Co. and reached the rank of T-3 Sgt.
Jack received the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal.
Jack was associated with the Reading Church of the Brethren in Homeworth
His survivors include his wife of 48 years, Pauline Smith; daughter, Mabel (Terry) Unkefer of Alliance; grandson, Matthew Unkefer; sister, Barbara Findling of Alliance; and brother, Walter (Charlene) Smith of Louisville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Donna Belle, sister, Margurite "Sis" Robinson, and brother, William "Buffalo" Smith.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Bradley officiating. Interment, with Military Honors will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
