James B. Ailes, age 90, of Alliance, died at 6:40 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born February 27, 1921, in Decatur, Illinois, to Floyd and Alma (Olson) Ailes and lived in Alliance most of his life.
A graduate of Alliance High School, Jim worked at Alliance Manufacturing for 46 years, retiring in 1986. He became a member of Conrad Masonic Lodge #271, on Nov. 7, 1951; a member of the American Legion for 60 years, member of United Commercial Travelers and sang with the Barber Shop Quartet of Alliance.
Mr. Ailes was a Corporal in the U.S. Marines, serving in the Marine Wing Service, squad 9 PMP from Aug. 1942 to Sept. 1945. He served in the South Pacific from March 1943 to Nov. 1944, and also participated in the New Georgia operation, Treasury Bougainville, and Consolidation, North Solomon Island.
Jim was a member of the First Friends Church in Salem and the Y Men's Club. He enjoyed dancing, golfing, bowling, music, especially whistling; and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Esther (Pauli) Ailes, whom he married July 3, 1948; daughter, Christine Ailes Jones of Worthington, Oh.; grandchildren, Heather (Jeremy) Shankle of Mt. Lake Terrace, Wa., Theresa Ailes of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Tracey Ailes of Palm Bay, Fla., and Aaron Ailes of North Canton; great-grandchildren, Tyler Shankle, Kieraten Shankle, and Evan McFadden; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty Keller and Nancy Burson; twin sister, Martha Grapentine; and one son, Gregory Ailes.
Graveside Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Fairmount Memorial Park with Rev. Pete Fowler and Rev. John Pierce co-officiating.
