James Clayton

August 8, 1914 — March 22, 2006

James A. Clayton formerly of Alliance, passed away Wednesday March 22, at Great Trail Center, in Minerva where he had resided since 2003.
He was born Aug. 8th, 1914 in Bayard, Oh, and was the son of the late David and Lula Clayton.
He was preceded in death on May 7, 1990 by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Vaunda, his beloved son Timothy on Nov. 9, 1964, a sister Helen Kunkle, brothers David Jr, Derwood, and 2 infant brothers.
James is survived by a son Terry and daughter-in-law Carolyn of Powell, Oh, daughter Nancy and son-in-law Harley Hillyer of Minerva, 7 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was a longtime member of the Evangelical Friends Church in Alliance, and retired after 32 years of faithful service with the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the 50's, he was a well known left handed pitcher for several championship fast-pitch teams in the area, including the Alliance Church League.
Services will be at 1:00 PM Monday March 27th in the Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with the Rev. David Sperry officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Hillyer family for the window fund of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, in Minerva, which he faithfully supported.
