James E. McClarren, age 71, of Alliance, passed away at 10:50 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center.
He was born October 24, 1942, in Alliance, Ohio, to the late Robert McClarren and Ida Mae McClarren Roberts and lived most of his life in the Alliance area.
Jim was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, taught Sunday school and played on the softball team. He also was a United States Army Veteran mainly serving in Germany.
He was past president of the Alliance Lion's Club and Rose Day Chairman in 1985, Democrat of the Year and past president of the Alliance Democrat Club, volunteered as a red coat at Alliance Community Hospital, served as Alliance Councilman-at-Large from 1984 to 1988 and for the second ward in 1990, helped to lower cost of workmans comp by starting a CPR training program for all city employees, past president of the former Exchange Club and recipient of the Jess Alter Award for special service to the club in 1992, served on the Alliance Civil Service Commission, member of the American Legion, PERS District 11 of the State of Ohio, before leaving the ward council of the city of Alliance in 1989 to work in the auditors office. He also was a Carnation Parade chairman for several years, court administrator for Judge Lavery and retired from the City of Alliance as the collection coordinator for the Alliance Water Department.
He received a special award for service and chaired a fundraiser for the City of Alliance to provide school supplies for the YWCA ABC for Kids project and a former member of the VFW Post 1036.
An avid sports fan, especially for the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians, Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy (Profeta) McClarren of Alliance, whom he married in 1978; daughter, Dawn McClarren of Bessemer City, North Carolina; brother, Ronald (Linda) McClarren of Louisville; a sister, Debra (Richard) Rhoads of Alliance; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce McClarren of Marine City, Mich. and Karen Hamon (Tim Johnson) of Sebring; several nieces and nephews; and two god-daughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Shirley (Glenn) Dallas and Ruth (Peter) Meiring; and brothers, Porter and Robert McClarren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Timothy Muse officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
