James Thorpe

James E. Thorpe, age 79, passed away suddenly in his home Wednesday, March 28, 2007.
He was born Oct. 28, 1927 in Alliance, Ohio to Jack and Armada (Toepfer) Thorpe.
He graduated from Alliance High School in 1946 and went on to continue his education earning a B.S. from Mount Union College in 1950. He worked for B & W Research in 1951 and from there continued his career with the Social Security Administration in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received a Victory Medal. He then went on to graduate from William McKinley School of Law in 1956. He worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation as an attorney and had an illustrious career serving the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate for fourteen years. His remarkable career also included private law practice for more than forty years and served the Ohio Industrial Commission Regional Board of Review, President of the Alliance Republican Club and Alliance Junior Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year 1964.
He was an avid tennis player and bicyclist. He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife. The only thing that gave him greater pleasure than watching his treasured Purple Raiders football team was spending time with his grandchildren, who loved him dearly. He will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to be touched by his life.
Mr. Thorpe is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (Hoffman) Thorpe; four sons, Phillip (Beverly) Thorpe of Indianapolis, IN., Mike Thorpe of Akron, John (Gail) Thorpe of Alliance, James Jr. (Mary) Thorpe of Alliance, and devoted and loving grandchildren; James Thorpe, Chrissy (Jerry) Mitchell, Gregory Thorpe, Mike Thorpe, Robert Thorpe, Chuck Thorpe, Mike Thorpe, Amber (Brad) Datz, Kay Thorpe, Devin & Dusty Vance, and Logan & Danielle Thorpe; one Great-Grandson, Andrew Datz and brother Jerry (Jean) Thorpe of Boardman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Thorpe and sister, Cecilia Laughlin.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Alliance Evangelical Friends Church with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mount Union College Athletic Department, 1972 Clark Ave. Alliance, Ohio 44601.
